Nahum 1

God Is Awesome

1The
Or burden
,
boracle of cNineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2A djealous and avenging God is the Lord;
The Lord is eavenging and
Lit a possessor of wrath
wrathful.
The Lord takes gvengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
3The Lord is hslow to anger and great in power,
And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In iwhirlwind and storm is His way,
And jclouds are the dust beneath His feet.
4He krebukes the sea and makes it dry;
He dries up all the rivers.
lBashan and Carmel wither;
The blossoms of Lebanon wither.
5Mountains mquake because of Him
And the hills ndissolve;
Indeed the earth is oupheaved by His presence,
The pworld and all the inhabitants in it.
6 qWho can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure the rburning of His anger?
His swrath is poured out like fire
And the trocks are broken up by Him.
7The Lord is ugood,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And vHe knows those who take refuge in Him.
8But with an woverflowing flood
He will make a complete end of
I.e. Nineveh’s
its site,
And will pursue His enemies into ydarkness.

9Whatever you zdevise against the Lord,
He will make a aacomplete end of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
10Like tangled abthorns,
And like those who are acdrunken with their drink,
They are adconsumed
As stubble completely withered.
11From you has gone forth
One who aeplotted evil against the Lord,
A
Or worthless; Heb Belial
,
agwicked counselor.

12Thus says the Lord, Though they are at full strength and likewise many,
Even so, they will be ahcut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you aino longer.
13So now, I will ajbreak his yoke bar from upon you,
And I will tear off your shackles.”

14The Lord has issued a command concerning
I.e. the king of Nineveh
you:
Lit No more of your name will be sown
Your name will amno longer be perpetuated.
I will cut off
Or a graven image
,
aoidol and
Lit cast metal image
image
From the house of your gods.
I will prepare your aqgrave,
For you are contemptible.”

15
Ch 2:1 in Heb
Behold, ason the mountains the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace!
atCelebrate your feasts, O Judah;
Pay your vows.
For aunever again will the
Or worthless one; Heb Belial
wicked one pass through you;
He is awcut off completely.
